history
Minister for Environment, Heritage and The Arts, Peter Garrett determined in October 2009 not to approve the proposed development on Great Keppel Island (GKI) or allow the undertaking of a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The Minister sited concerns for the scale and potential for environmental impact of the proposed development and highlighted these concerns to the GKI Revitalisation Project Team. His office identified areas for which the GKI Revitalisation Plan would need to address in order to ensure the project had minimal impact on the ecological features of GKI.
The Team took on board the departments concerns and participated in a number of meetings where they were discussed in great detail. From these meetings, a detailed, environmental constraints based assessment has been undertaken and the new GKI Revitalisation Plan has been developed.
