Key Objectives

Following Minister Garrett’s decision in October, 2009, the GKI Revitalisation Plan Project Team has assembled a group of some of Australia’s most experienced and highly qualified environmental scientists to address every single one of the Minister's concerns and the concerns of the local community.

The key objectives of the GKI Revitalisation Plan are as follows and are intended to ensure that:

  1. The quality of the Southern Great Barrier Reef improves over the life of the Resort;
  2. Improved research facilities are made available in the Southern Great Barrier Reef;
  3. The World Heritage Values of the Great Barrier Reef are actively protected and enhanced;
  4. The community of Central Queensland have improved access to the Island; and
  5. Any environmental impacts are either mitigated or offset through commitments to environmental sustainability.

The revitalisation of GKI provides Australia with an opportunity to show the world it has embraced sustainable design and operation in tourism. GKI Revitalisation Plan will not only protect the World Heritage Values of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) but will also make a direct contribution to their preservation.
