PROJECT Overview

Located 12 kilometres off the Central Queensland coast, Great Keppel Island (GKI) is one of the most accessible and beautiful of over 900 Great Barrier Reef (GBR) islands and coral cays.

Holding a strong place in the local community’s heart, the Island has lacked a quality, comprehensive facility for many years that could showcase the Island and all it has to offer.

GKI is one of only 28 islands in the Great Barrier Reef that have purpose-built tourism resorts. As an already developed site it presents a unique opportunity for revitalization as recognized in the State Government’s 2009 Central Queensland Tourism Opportunity Plan.

The essence of GKI Revitalisation Plan is to create a low rise, eco-tourism resort on GKI which predominately sits on the site of a former resort facility and over land previously disturbed by long term grazing activities.

The former resort facility does not meet the stringent, current-day environmental protection legislation and planning legislation that the GKI Revitalisation Plan will need to. GKI Revitalisation Plan will in fact address and mitigate many of the environmental issues caused by previous activities.
